Teaching and Learning with Technology LISTSERV available to Faculty!

A new and informative LISTSERV, designed not to overwhelm your e-mail service, has been created by the folks at the Instructional Resource Center (IRC) for faculty interested in using technology for courses.

The Teaching and Learning with Technology (TLT) list was established to foster communication supporting the integration of teaching and technology. The list is supported by DoIT’s Learning Support Services staff, managed by the IRC, and all GMU faculty are invited to participate. The List was put in place to provide support for and/or start a dialogue about Mason-related teaching with technology. It will also supply resources from outside the university — articles, weblogs, webcasts and more — and will provide access to a wider community of practice interested in teaching with technology.

Interested faculty are invited to subscribe themselves ( http://listserv.gmu.edu/ archives/tlt-l.html , then click the Join or Leave the List link.) or contact Rick Reo at rreo@gmu.edu, or at 703-993-8536.

WebCT and Open Source Software

Feldstein and Farmer provide differing perspectives on the future of enterprise level CMSs / LMSs, such as our lovable WebCT, relative to Open Source Software (OSS). http://mfeldstein.com/index.php/weblog/webct_and_open_source/
According to Feldstein, the way this all plays out in the future is: "What we’ll have is an Open Source Learning Management Operating System--a service-oriented integration framework that lets schools--and individual faculty members--plug in the components (whether Open or closed) that are best for them.

Feldstein, who works for SUNY online learning system, recently shared a major task force report on SUNY Learning Environments that details what an optimal institutional learning mgmt platform should have: http://sln.suny.edu/pdfs/taskforcefinalreport.pdf The report contains a nice matrix of the base configurations and core features.

James Farmer is currently providing us with some free consultation on implementing an open source, multi user blogging tool at Mason.
